Epsilon Chi to Sponsor UPCC Concert

UP Concert ChorusHOUSTON, July 31 (Mabuhay) -- The UP Concert Chorus won triple gold medals in the 8th Mainhausen Internationale Chortage (International Choral Competition) in Germany.

After having swept these prizes in every category of the competition they joined (mixed choir, female and male choir), the jury of the Mainhausen competition invited the group to perform in the 2004 Bochum International Choral Festival in Germany.

In August, the UPCC will represent the Philippines in the 31st Aberdeen International Youth Festival and will compete in the 51st Guido dArezzo International Polyphonic Competition in Italy.

The troupe will fly back to the United States in October.

In Barcelona, Spain, the UPCC is a participant in the prestigious Europa Cantat XV Festival. Some 48 countries are represented in this festival and this triennial festival is attended by 4,000 in different cities in Europe.

The 33 singers, under the baton of Prof. Janet Sabas-Aracama, attended the atelier "Show Choir" which was directed by noted American conductor-choreographer Dwight Jordan.

The UPCC also was featured in a special showcase concert in Palwu de’ Esports during the second night of the festival. After only the second song, the group received a standing ovation, according to Prof. Sabas-Aracama.

"From the first day of the workshop, I knew I had a wonderful choir in my atelier," notes Jordan, who is originally based in Chicago. "These kids were so amazing they are fast learners and hard workers. I would love to work with them."

When the group returns to the US, it will perform again in Houston on Oct. 26, 2:30 p.m., at the Stafford Civic Center. The group’s Houston performance will coincide with the 2003 UP Alumni Association in America general assembly and national convention to be held on Oct. 24-26, 2003 at the Westin Oaks Hotel at the Galleria.

The return performance is sponsored by the Texas Chapter of the UP Epsilon Chi Fraternity, Inc. Earlier, the UPAA Houston chapter hosted the concert chorus.

Proceeds from the Oct. 26 presentation will benefit the projects of the UP fraternity at the UP College of Engineering.
